Empowering Women Human Rights Defenders

The Women Positive Empowerment Initiative (WOPEIN) director Madam Lillian Namiiro recently participated in a significant trauma management and collective healing session for Executive Directors at Sir Jose Hotel. This event was organized by OGERA Uganda, under the project “Promoting Resilience, Solidarity, and Well-Being among Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) through Self and Collective Care Initiatives.” The session aimed to address the mental health challenges faced by WHRDs and foster a culture of resilience and solidarity.

WHRDs frequently encounter trauma and face immense work pressures due to their commitment to advocating for marginalized communities and fighting for justice. These experiences can lead to burnout, anxiety, and other mental health issues. The initiative by OGERA Uganda acknowledges these challenges and emphasizes the importance of self-care and collective care practices as vital components for sustaining the well-being of women leaders in the human rights space.

The session at Sir Jose Hotel offered a supportive environment for participants to share their experiences, practice self-care techniques, and learn strategies for managing stress and trauma. This collective healing approach not only empowers WHRDs to continue their vital work but also strengthens the bonds within the human rights community, fostering a sense of solidarity.

Special appreciation goes to OGERA Uganda for spearheading this essential initiative. Partnering organizations like the Empowered At Dusk Women’s Association (SLUM – Serving Lives Under Marginalization) and the JEEWAG Foundation have shown commitment to supporting WHRDs on their journey toward healing and resilience.

As we continue to advocate for the rights of marginalized groups, let’s also prioritize the well-being of those on the front lines. Through trauma management and collective care, we can create a more resilient and empowered community of women defenders dedicated to making a difference.
